What is a Pregnancy Fit to Fly Letter?
A pregnancy fit to fly letter, also known as a pregnancy travel certificate, is an official medical document issued by a doctor that confirms your stage of pregnancy, expected due date, and that you are medically fit to fly. Most airlines require this letter for pregnant passengers from 28 weeks onwards.
The letter must be issued by a registered medical practitioner and include specific information airlines commonly ask for: confirmation of single or multiple pregnancy, expected due date, confirmation of no complications, and the doctor's assessment that you are fit to travel by air. Each letter includes the doctor's GMC registration number and signature.
Airlines set their own policies, so requirements vary between carriers and can change. We recommend checking with your airline directly before you travel - see the timing guidance below.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority notes that most airlines require a certificate after 28 weeks confirming the pregnancy is progressing normally, that there are no complications, and the expected date of delivery. The NHS gives similar guidance for travel after week 28.
